Error 1330 "Invalid digital signature"

Problem: I got the following message: "Error 1330. A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file K:\MediaS~1.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt. Error 24592 was returned by WinVerifyTrust". Tried twice to install with same results. Help!!

Solution: Error 1330 is an extremely common error message on Windows computers. [Which is why this FAQ gets four times as many "hits" as any other of our FAQs - the entire Internet comes here for an answer!!]

We have not seen this error on Mac computers. You will see a message that a file has an invalid digital signature. Except that all the version 7 files actually DO HAVE a valid digital signature! So this is actually a problem associated with Microsoft Windows and their built-in security or something associated with your computer's registry. Windows Installer error message 1330 can be returned when WinVerifyTrust - a security check that validates the digital signature against a file - fails to read the entire file.

There are a number of reasons why Error 1330 might happened, but the most common reason is caused when you install new programs over old ones that are not completely uninstalled, causing registry pile ups that result in error messages. Another reason for Error 1330 is malware programs attaching themselves to your PC and wrecking havoc, deleting crucial files from your PC. When downloading files from the Internet it is possible, on slower connections, to have your downloaded files become corrupted and cause this error. Software companies have come up with a variety of solutions and work-arounds for Error 1330 (we are not the only ones faced with this frustrating error message.)

The first thing to try is to copy the 33 files on the USB flash drive to a folder on your Desktop. We suggest creating a new folder called TBS. Then copy the 33 files into this folder. Then open the folder and double-click setup.exe (the one with the lower case "s".) The reason this works best is because you computer can read all 33 files much faster from your desktop than from the USB Flash Drive. The WinVerifyTrust that Microsoft is running to check these files may "time out" when trying to access the USB drive and that often leads to WinVerifyTrust just "throwing up its arms" and giving up and returning the Error 1330, even though there is nothing wrong.

Here is a fascinating report from a user. PLEASE let us know if you try it and it works for you:
"I installed the program when I didn't have an internet connection. Windows prompted me that it couldn't access its online verification tools if I didn't have an internet connection and that I would be at risk. This might be the key for Windows 10 users to avoid the 1330 Error. Once the files are downloaded, and or the thumb drive is inserted; simply shut off the wireless receiver or unplug." Our thanks to Timothy Ackerman for this suggestion.

The second thing to try is to make a few changes in the Security section of your Control Panel.
For Vista Operating Systems:

1. Go to "Control Panel"
2. Click "Classic View" on the left
3. Double-click "Internet Options"
4. Click the "Advanced" tab
5. Scroll down to the "Security" section and CHECK this box:
Allow the software to run or install even if the signature is invalid
6. UNCHECK the following three items:
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for server certificate revocation
Check for signatures on downloaded program
7. Click "OK"
8. Restart your computer
9. Try installing the Thayer Birding Software version 7 again

For Windows 7 or Windows 8

1. Start "Control Panel"
2. If necessary, Double-click "Network and Internet"
3. Click "Internet Options"
4. Click the "Advanced" tab
5. Scroll down to the "Security" section and CHECK this box:
Allow the software to run or install even if the signature is invalid
6. UNCHECK the following three items:
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for server certificate revocation
Check for signatures on downloaded program
7. Click "OK"
8. Restart your computer
9. Try installing the Thayer Birding Software version 7 again

The third thing to try is to email Pete@ThayerBirding.com and request that we email you a link to download the Windows version 7. This solution requires that you have a fairly fast Internet download speed.
Check your download speed on this web page.
Please let us know when you bought the USB Flash Drive. This solution has worked for more than one person, including someone using French as the default language in Windows.

The fourth thing to try is to download a PC Cleanup Program from the Internet and run it to clean up the registry problems on your computer. We recommend [Wise registry cleaner](http://www.wisecleaner.com/download.html "Wise Registry Cleaner"). (You should probably do this anyway.)

The fifth thing to try is to uninstall the Microsoft's **security patch KB978601**, especially if you see an additional error message about Error 24592. [Security patch KB2918614 seems to have broken the Windows installer in Windows 7. You may want to delete that if you see it too.] For home users only, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY or 1-866-234-6020 or 1-800-936-5700 in the United States and in Canada. Since there is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number ( KB978601).
To uninstall KB978601 do this:
1. Open the Control Panel
2. Where it says "View By" select large icons
3. At the bottom of the list click "Windows Update"
4. Click "View update history" on the left
5. At the very top of the screen, click "installed updates" and wait for the list to appear
6. In the Search box type KB978601
7. If it is there, delete it

If you are able to solve this problem on your computer and you used a method not listed here, PLEASE email Pete@ThayerBirding.com so that we can share your information with others! There is probably nothing wrong with the Thayer Birding Software program or the 33 files you use to install the program. You can prove this by going to the "corrupted" file in your TBS folder (or on the USB drive) and right-click the name of the file. Then click Properties. Then click the Digital Signature tab at the top. Then click on Thayer Birding Software inside the box. Then click the Details button. Wait a minute or two and you will see a new screen pop up. At the top where it says Digital Signature Information in bold letters you will see a message just below this that says "This digital signature is OK." The digital signature is created for us by Symantec Time Stamping Services. [If you actually DO see "invalid signature" appear, please email Pete@Thayerbirding.com and tell us which file is corrupt. We will send you a new file.]

**John Fleming writes** "I installed version 7 on my regular desktop PC that is connected to the internet, etc. with a regular network cable – not wireless. Where I was having the problem and seeing Error 1330 was with my laptop that is using built-in wireless to connect to the internet, etc. I think maybe using the wireless laptop to download the files might have caused a problem – i.e. corrupted files or something. In thinking back I did have one zip file that was corrupted and wouldn’t unzip but a second download came down clean and was able to unzip."
